This is an unfinished portrait of Ambroise Vollard, the art dealer who helped make the names of artists such as Cezanne, Picasso, Gauguin and Van Gogh. It is unclear if Vollard ever represented Mela Muter.
A blog dedicated to the great, underappreciated Polish/French post impressionist artist Maria Mela Muter (1876-1967.)
After many years researching and collecting works by Mela Muter (full name - Maria Melania Mutermilch, née Klingsland) I will be posting biographical items and reproductions of her work here, so that they can be enjoyed in context.
There are many problems with Muter's legacy - she repainted many of her works, and neglected to sign or date others. Most of the works here are provisionally dated. I am interested in any information as to the origin or dates of any of these works, as well as general information on the life and work of Mela Muter. Email: artinconnu at gmail dot com.
Interested in little known and forgotten artists, the studios, the ephemera, the artists materials and the stories behind the paintings and their creation.
